About

It has come to our attention while organising Bespoked Bristol - The UK Handmade and Boutique Bicycle Show that there is not a central resource listing all handmade bicycle makers. We have found that people are using the Bespoked Bristol website for this information, which is great for the show but we feel a more year round, complete directory would be better. So we have established The Handmade Bicycle Directory, which will enable the public to find details on handmade bicycle makers in the UK, Europe and beyond. The directory will also clarify terms used.

We will be including the UK edition of this directory as part of Bespoked Bristol 2011 Show Catalogue which will be given to each person attending the show. It will also be sent out across the industry. The format for the catalogue will be different to this page.

The Handmade Directory & Buyers Guide

Introduction

When people talk of a handmade or custom bicycle they are more than likely referring to having the frame made for them and then choosing the components to best suit that style of the frame (and the size of their bank account). This frame will not exist until its commission.

What we are trying to do is to inform the buying public exactly what they are getting by defining the categories below. Please let us know what you think of these and if we have any glaring omissions  ( phil@thmbd.com ).

Custom Built – In house (excluding painting)

Every aspect of the frame is selected to suit the rider (and their budget), tubing/material, frame angles, joint type, braze on’s and frame colour. The frame will be the end result of a consultation process often involving a frame fitting. Not all framebuilders have spraying facilities in house. These frames do not exist before being commissioned.

Expect to pay upwards of £1000 for a custom made frame

Custom Built – Manufacture Outsourced

Almost identical to the above apart from the manufacture of the frame is outsourced. This is more common with titanium and carbon frames due to the more complex manufacture process. It would not be uncommon for a framebuilder to produce their steel frames in house but outsource other materials.

Again, these frames do not exist before being commissioned.

Expect to pay upwards of £1000 for a custom made frame

Boutique Frames and Bicycles (small scale batch production)

A frame designer designs the frame, choosing the tubing/materials, angles etc. The frame are then made to these requirements often in a range of sizes.

These bicycles often are sold as frame only or with a selection of build options as the designer will have given consideration to what will suit the style of frame. These frames exist before commission.

Expect to pay upwards of £300 for a frame depending upon materials, complete bicycles often cost around £1000 but this depends greatly on the components.

Manufacture can be in house or outsourced this will be stated in the listing.

Within this category are some larger producers who make a range of bicycles where only some would meet the ‘boutique’ label.

Vintage Frames and Bicycles

Previously used frames that have been renovated, often to your requirements. These frames could be any of the above and are often sold as complete bicycles with boutique components.
